The unique thing about this episode is I was just recently yesterday having an event in New York City with call Rove and I told Karl Rove bet him $20 in fact that Sherry Beasley would be the next United States senator from the great state of North Carolina,

the Tarhill State. Welcome to the show.

Madam Chief Justice.

Look, we start each one of our episodes by having our candidates walk us through the

0:50.8

arc of their careers. So talk to us about your career arc that has been being a public defender, decades on the bench, a brief stint in private practice, and now as a candidate for the U.S. Senate, why did you take each of these steps and how did they lead you to this decision to run for the United States Senate?

1:10.0

You know, I have served as a public defender and as a judge and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina. I've been in public service in North Carolina for nearly 30 years and in court almost every day, respecting the rule of law and upholding the Constitution and really taking my oath very seriously and I've known that Washington has

failed the people in North Carolina and I know it's time for that to change and as I

travel across the state I know so many people are really concerned about the fact that there are always these elevated interests around corporate and special interests. People are really tired of that. they really want to know that the next

1:53.2

senator is going to work very hard and so I think my my previous oaths and my

1:59.6

commitment to respecting the rule of law and upholding the Constitution bear very well for service in the United States.

2:09.7

I'm really excited about this opportunity. You know, some of our listeners are political junkies, in fact most of them are, so they understand the stakes in this cycle when it comes to why we have to hold the Senate and expand our majority.

2:23.6

But for those that don't, why is your race so critical in not only getting two

2:28.1

additional senators who might consider changing the filibuster, but for issues like providing national protections for women seek and reproductive health care services, voting rights and police reform.

2:40.0

Well, you know, it is it is critical that we're at a place where we have politicians who are completely out of step with the wishes and desires of people here in North Carolina but also people all across this country and particularly around reproductive freedom and the right to have an abortion.

3:00.0

You certainly know that we've had that right for nearly 50 years for women to be able to make this decision for themselves with their doctors without government interference.

3:10.0

And as I travel across our county, we're a big state.

3:13.2

We're the ninth largest with 100 counties

3:15.5

and everywhere across the state people are concerned.
