People ask me over and over about eating a cheat meal on keto. Here are the points to consider. When you’re first starting keto, and you’re not yet fully adapted to fat-burning, I don’t recommend a cheat meal. It could take you 20 hours or more to get back into ketosis, and that’s from just one meal! But after a few months when you’re fully adapted, you’ll be able to bounce back a lot quicker.

If you feel the need to go off the program, ask yourself what problem you’re trying to solve, and then see if you can solve it. Is it a blood sugar issue? Sometimes people cheat to try to bring their mood up.

Once you start cheating, it’s really hard to stop. I know from personal experience many years ago. I would cheat and then the next day craves the very food I’d cheated by eating. Nowadays, I feel so good when I’m on the program that I don’t need to go off it. I know how lousy I’ll feel if I do, and it’s not worth it.

Your important goal is to build up so much health in your body and develop so much health reserve, that going off the program won’t create a dent in your health. But if you go off it in the beginning, that’s not good, because you haven’t created your health yet.

If you find it challenging to stick to keto in the beginning, it’s okay to do the best you can and work your way up to one hundred percent keto. Having a cheat meal early on will prevent you from creating the health you want.
