The Apex and the Abyss presents the chasm, episode 16, The Gragg Family Murders.

With most chasm episodes, there is little to no reporting on the case.

This can be for a multitude of reasons.

It can be due to the age of the case or simply because there is just a general lack of information.

This particular story is just like that, and it involves the Gregg family.

Ralph Marler Gregg was born on June 7th, 1917 in Caldwell County, North Carolina.

Not much is known about Ralph's childhood apart from the fact that he was one of five children born to Joseph and Martha Gragg.

Another bit of information that we know is that he met and married a woman

named Ruth Story. Ruth was born in 1915 to Jesse and Mary Story in Caldwell County, North

Carolina, and she had six siblings. Ralph and Ruth would allegedly get married in 1937 when the pair were in their early 20s.

However, the date of their marriage could be off by a few years.

What we do know for certain is that the couple welcomed eight children into the world.

Catherine, who was born in 1935, Christine, born in 1938, Jimmy, born in 1940, Peggy in 1941,

Carolyn, born in 1943, Paul in 1945, Betty, born in 1946, and finally Rebecca, born in 1948.

Despite the large number of children, the Grags were not a happy family.

It has been said that Ralph was an abusive man to his wife and children,

so much so that Ruth would eventually leave Ralph and her eight children.

In November of 1950, before Ruth would leave, Ralph would get

injured at the sawmill that he was employed at. The injury was not disclosed, but it prevented him
