Let's definitely start with a deep breath tonight. Good evening, everyone. I am Stephanie Rule,

and we are tracking the latest on the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Orham, Utah,

earlier today. Kirk was fatally shot this afternoon as he held an event at Utah Valley University.

He was just 31 years old. He leaves behind a wife and two young

children. Tonight, hundreds of people gathered in Orham to remember Kirk. FBI director,

Cash Patel, had posted that a subject was in custody. Then he said that person was released by

law enforcement. So at this time, there is no suspect in custody and the manhunt

continues. This is what we heard from authorities on the ground.

We are completely aligned with our state and federal partners as we work through this case.

Now, this is a dark day for our state. It's a tragic day for our nation.

And I want to be very clear that this is a political assassination. Campus police reported

a single shot was fired from a building hundreds of feet away as Kirk took questions from a

crowd of college students. Liz Kreutz has more on the scene.

Kirk, who had just thrown hats to the cheering crowd and posted on X, we are so back touting

the first stop on what he called the American

comeback tour, the 31-year-old conservative star who rallied young people behind President Trump.

He just started talking there under that white tent when witnesses say one shot rang out.

The shooting was captured on video and is too disturbing to show.

Immediately, crowds started running for cover.

We just heard an immediate pop.
