0:08.0 | Charles Hodge was born in 1797 and he died in 1878. His life spans much of the 19th century and was a significant |
0:17.6 | figure in what we call Old Princeton. Now Princeton University was founded back in 1741, got started about 1746. |
0:28.8 | What we're talking about is Princeton Theological Seminary. |
0:32.3 | It was founded in the year 1812 by a man |
0:35.2 | by the name of Archibald Alexander. |
0:39.0 | And Hodge was a student early on at Princeton, |
0:41.9 | but he would come to Phil Archibald Alexander's shoes as the theologian at Old Princeton. |
0:49.0 | As I mentioned, Hodras born in 1797. His father, who was a physician there in Philadelphia, a very significant |
0:57.6 | physician, had a substantial reputation. He died seven months after Charles Hodge was born. So Charles Hodge never knew his father. |
1:07.0 | His father did leave his family some significant resources and had invested some money in the |
1:12.2 | docks of Philadelphia. |
1:14.0 | But with the War of 1812, the Hodge family lost all of their holdings in those docks. |
1:21.0 | Hodges mother used the money from the sale of their home |
1:24.5 | to purchase a very large home near Princeton. |
1:27.2 | And she used that large home then |
1:29.7 | to rent out parts of it to borders |
1:32.2 | so that the family would have income. |
1:35.2 | It was during this time that Charles Hodge began his studies as a student at Princeton University, |
1:41.0 | and Archibald Alexander, who was at Princeton Sem Seminary had just started in 1812. |
1:45.8 | He would go over to the university and he would see if he could identify some students that |
1:49.8 | would show promise for the pastoral ministry and one of those students he identified |
