Summary

In today’s episode, we cover the necessity of routines with Charles Duhigg. Charles is a Pulitzer-prize winning American journalist and non-fiction author, was a reporter for The New York Times, and has authored two books on habits and productivity, titled The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business and Smarter Faster Better. Routines are more important than we give them credit for, but why, what happens if we don’t establish routines for ourselves, and how can you build a great routine even when your world has been turned upside down? What to Listen For Why are routines so important for humans? What questions can you ask to spark interesting conversations instead of small talk? How can you consume entertainment in a way that nurtures your creativity and ability to lead interesting conversations? What can you do to find and identify experts you can trust? How do you distinguish between someone who is genuinely seeking advice and someone who is just venting? Why is mindset important when it comes to learning new skills? What exercise can you start doing today if you are struggling with accepting painful events in your life? What can you do to develop empathy and why is empathy so important today? The word “routine” may evoke thoughts of mundaneness, or mindless repetition, but routines are incredibly important to us as humans. Routines allow us to remove the necessity of making difficult decisions by automating them. Going to the gym stops being about dragging yourself out the door and instead becomes the thing you do every morning because it’s your routine. Eating a healthy meal for lunch stops being a choice in suffering and instead becomes the part of your routine that leads to a healthier you and prevents you from giving in to cravings. Routines are important, and positive healthy routines are the key to supporting you on your path to living the life you dream of. Now we had Charles on the show a little while ago. That's episode 735, the best ways to rewrite bad habits if you want to check it out after this one.

Now today we're talking about his podcast. How to with Charles Duhig and it just celebrated its first anniversary. Johnny and I really dig the show especially the two recent episodes how to talk to strangers and how to stop procrastinating. It's a fantastic format and it's just a lot of fun to listen to.

1:30.2

Welcome to the show Charles. It's good to have you back. Thanks for having me. I'm really psyched to be here. Yeah, we've really enjoyed your podcast and researching for the show and last time we talked about building habits and breaking bad habits.

1:42.0

And we're halfway through 2020. Obviously a lot of time to create some new habits and breaks and bad habits that would have you worked on so far.

1:50.2

A lot of time. So let's see, I just a month ago I moved from Brooklyn where I lived for the last 16 years to Santa Cruz, California because my wife got a new job.

2:00.6

And so that's obviously moving during a pandemic has its own challenges to begin with. We had to sort of move the entire podcast operation.

2:09.0

So I had to like set up a new studio. And but on the other hand, being here and just being in a pandemic, it kind of gives us this like wonderful opportunity.

2:16.3

Great new habits because all our old cues and rewards are suddenly gone. And so it's like a blank slate in a lot of ways for building new behaviors.

2:25.5

Yeah, we've talked to a lot of our clients who not having a commute have reoriented their morning routine, their evening routine.

2:34.5

I just wanted to add to that as well. When this all came down, how long it was going to last was a bit nebulous for everybody.

2:41.3

But we all sort of had an innate feeling that this was going to be more of a marathon than a sprint.

2:47.7

And with that comes the psychological experiment that none of us had asked for of being an isolation not having our routines taken from us.

2:56.0

For myself and my own sanity, I realized that building any more new routines and figuring out a way to keep my old habits was going to be beneficial for all of this.

3:08.9

And my friends and the people who I've seen around me who thought this was just going to be Netflix, Benjing for a couple of weeks and back to work.

3:17.4

They're having major problems.

3:19.5

Absolutely. And this totally ties I think you're exactly right. And this ties into like what we know about psychology, right?
