Charity and Sylvia were a same-sex couple who lived together in 19th century Weybridge, Vermont for over 40 years, recognised by members of their community as a married couple. 0:12.0	This week I'll be talking about Charity Bryant and Sylvia Drake, who were two women who lived essentially as a married couple in the USA in the early 1800s.
0:30.5	Charity Bryant was the older of the two, Sylvia and Charity, so I'm going to talk about
0:35.1	her first. She was born on the 22nd of May in 1777, in North Bridgetta in Massachusetts. So she was born in the third year of the American
0:42.6	War of Independence, and that's going to be important because all the, like, Republican
0:46.3	ideals about, like, independence and fraternity and stuff affect how she lives her life,
0:50.6	and are really important at the time. She's the youngest of eight children. That is too many children.
0:54.8	That is too many children.
0:55.9	These are Puritans in the early 1800s.
0:58.1	They're all going to have too many kids.
0:59.2	Cool.
0:59.9	I'll get prepared for that.
1:01.1	What was the average number of kids at the time?
1:02.9	Was that like slightly too many children or like a normal number of children or not
1:06.9	sure, but Sylvia's also the youngest of eight children.
1:09.9	Okay. So, and most of their siblings have eight or more children.
1:14.8	Okay.
1:15.5	So Sylvia has seven siblings, and between them they have 64 kids.
