Loss Angeles, March 27, 1991. A man is driving along slowly, glancing at alleyways and

garages and storefronts, looking for something to burn.

He's not someone most people will remember seeing, average build, average face.

He walks into a fabric store, DNM yardage, with a palm-sized incendiary device wrapped

in a piece of paper. At the back of the store he finds what he's looking for, a display

of drapes backed with polyphone. He tucks his device into the drapes and walks out the door.

You could just see this cloud of smoke just coming over our heads. I'm screaming to the other girl,

there's a fire. Evelyn Diaz was working at DNM yardage at the time.

It's our runaround, I'm going towards the back to get the fire extinguisher and I get it,

I really don't know how to use it. I try to put this fire up, figured it's going to go out fast

because it's so small and it just kept burning and burning and burning.

The more I put the extinguisher out of the figure would get.

Within minutes, DNM yardage is an inferno. It burns to the ground.

But before the drapes even caught fire, the man who said it had already moved on.

Down the block, four other stores are on fire. Fire companies scramble to contain them.

And the arsonist disappears like smoke.

I was a young, very energetic, enthusiastic case agent when this case kicked off.

This is April Carol. At the time she was a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol,

Tobacco, and Firearms, or ATF. A few days after that string of arson's hit five stores

across LA, April was assigned to investigate.

We had a series of fires and businesses open in broad daylight and we just were dumbfounded

that someone could go in during business hours and set a fire when people were inside.
