And before this week's Stonecliffe or Richard Herring, I've discovered the passage from Beads

an ecclesiastical history of the English people or Hithoria, Eccleiatica Gentith and Gloram,

which was written around the 720's, completed in 731.

I don't know when this particular passage was written by the venerable bead,

but this is the first ever mention of stone clearers in history.

And in the fields are the folk known as Thotone Cleareth.

They didn't have the letter S in these days.

A strange band of vagabond

who doth labour be a day or nicht, pulling the phatones from the foil. They doth their work

naked after the day they wath burst, fay for a garment made of hefian, which they doth wear around their nepheth and codlings.

They worship false gods, and are an affront to the Lord Jepath, and when discovered, are chased

from the towns and villets, and put in photoxts or hanged from the trith with their photones in their pockets never woth a man who so ho so thirst and despised than these foil-coated waffeth.

So there we go.

That's the first mention of these guys,

proof, if proof be need be,
