On October 20th, 1865, Confederate Gorilla Champ Ferguson was marched to the Gallows over in Nashville, Tennessee. Just 10 days prior, he had been found guilty of 53 counts of murder.

And that was just the official number.

According to Ferguson himself, he had killed well over 100 men, friends, neighbors, wounded prisoners,

pretty much anyone he considered a threat or even a potential threat.

And even as the news was placed around his neck,

he remained defiant, stating that he was a southern man from the start and that he would die

a rebel. Who was the real champ Ferguson? A Confederate patriot just to finning his homeland against

Yankee aggressions, or just another cold-blooded killer using the war as an excuse to indulge

his bloodlust.

Samuel Champ Ferguson was born in Clinton County, Kentucky on November 29, 1821.

The eldest of 10 children, he grew up in what was known as the Kentucky Highlands,

hill country along the border with Tennessee that was mostly populated by poor farmers.
