Summary

In our 5th ward hustings of the 2023 elections in Portsmouth we welcome Central Southsea candidates; Suzy Horton (Liberal Democrats) & Joshua Allen (Labour). We also read statements from Alicia Denny (Conservative). Other candidates in Central Southsea: Lee Tindal (Portsmouth Independents Party) Menno Groen (Green Party) You'll need photo ID to vote in person on May 4th: Apply for Voter Authority Certificate (free photo ID) by April 25th: https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/i-am-a/voter/voter-id Questions: 1. What are the key issues facing this ward? 2. Albert Road marks the southern edge of the ward. What would you see the council do to help local shopping areas survive and thrive? 3. As well as shops, Albert road is also home to many restaurants and entertainment venues like the Wedgewood Rooms & Kings Theatre. How can the council encourage a thriving night-time economy while respecting residents’ need for sleep? 4. How can the need for affordable housing be met while restricting the proliferation of HMOs? 5. Inflation in food, energy bills & even council tax typify the cost of living crisis. With many families struggling, what would you see the council do to help? 6. Parking is a problem here as in most parts of the city. How can we end rat-run culture and solve parking without pitting car users against those choosing active travel? 7. Anti social behaviour, burglary & theft is blighting the lives of residents. What’s your solution? 8. The almost certain outcome of the election is NOC, how would you ensure you get the best deal for the ward’s residents? 9. If successful, what would be the one thing you’d want to see implemented to improve life for residents of the ward?
