If you are ever in Puerto Rico, you have to take a Bombay class by the legendary Sheila Osorio,

an Afro-Portur-Portur-Bamba dancer and cultural manager. She usually holds classes on Saturdays for about $20.

But what exactly is Bomba?

Bomba is the traditional Afro-Pyrurican dance

that has been around for over 400 years.

It was created by enslaved

who was Africans who worked in sugar plantations along the coast of Puerto Rico.

Bomba was one of the only ways for enslaved people to express themselves freely

and feel powerful.

Africans are believed to have released feelings of sadness, anger, and resistance during dance

gatherings called by Liz the Bombay.

Bombay was also used to celebrate baptisms and marriages, communicate with each other, and

planned rebellions.

One of the things that makes Bombay unique is that the dancer sets the drummer's rhythm. Look closely at this drummer.
