The government of the US Virgin Islands will determine the amount Puerto Rico will be given money based on for what Puerto Rico would have been given if they had the same tax code. Puerto Rico will not be given the money until Puerto Rico submits a plan that is approved by the Secretary of the Treasury for distributing the payments to the residents. for universities & higher education schools that were affected by the hurricanes or have students affected by the hurricanes. Gives money (Project School Emergency Response to Violence, which helps schools recover from traumatic events) on a $18.67 billion to the DHS and FEMA for their disaster relief fund will be for loans to local governments to provide essential services needed as a result of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, or Maria $526.5 million to the Department of Agriculture and the Forest Service for fire suppression $16 billion of National Flood Insurance Program debt $1.27 billion for food for Puerto Rico Changes how bankruptcy court judges are appointed and raises some fees. 0:40.0	So that's a great way to start off this episode because I'm going to tell you right now that this episode is kind of chaotic.
0:47.0	The majority of this episode is about disaster relief because the United States has been a giant shop of horrors for the past few months with natural
0:54.5	disaster after natural disaster pummeling the United States. First Hurricane Harvey drowned Houston.
1:00.6	Then Hurricane Irma took out the U.S. Virgin Islands, Key West and caused damage from Florida to the
1:05.3	Carolinas.
1:06.7	Then Hurricane Maria delivered a fatal blow to Puerto Rico, and now as I speak, the Bay Area
1:11.9	in California is on fire.
1:14.4	I haven't left my house for more than a few minutes for the last two days because the smoke is
1:18.0	so thick, and I won't be spending time outdoors again tomorrow either.
1:21.8	Napa and Sonoma have lost 3,500 buildings in counting and we've lost
1:26.0	at least 20 people which is so awful and the winds are picking up again starting tonight.
1:32.1	I'm recording this on Friday the 13th,
1:34.4	which seems fitting because this summer has been a festival of nightmares.
1:39.0	Now in one of the last few episodes I told you about a new law that provided 15 billion dollars in disaster aid but that's not nearly enough
1:46.4	and so in this episode I'm going to tell you about the next relatively big
1:51.6	disaster aid bill that will likely be law very soon and I'll tell you about a few bills that have already been signed into law with some so-called disaster relief attached.
