Summary

A quick fact check followed by an introduction to ALEC, the association of lawmakers and corporations working together to write bills. Fact Checking CD011 Conversation has been reported to be operating in the following countries Afghanistan Iraq Pakistan Sudan Bosnia Syria Somalia Egypt Saudi Arabia Yemen Algeria Mali Mauritania Morocco Niger Tunisia Turkey Kenya Tanzania United States Last week, a bill was rammed through the Virginia State Senate that redraws the maps for their State Senate races in a way that gives more votes to Republicans. Henry Marsh is a civil rights lawyer and Democratic VA Senator who went to Washington D.C. for the inauguration. The VA State Senate is a 20-20 split, so while he was gone, the GOP surprised the DEM's by bringing the bill up for a vote knowing they would be able to pass it with a DEM Senator missing. The House and Governor of Virginia are Republicans. The bill's chances look good. There is SEPARATE bill that addresses the Electoral College that was just born in Subcommittee. The electoral college bill's path to law looked good but the bill was defeated in committee Tuesday on an 11-4 vote after the Governor came out against the bill. and Hello and welcome to the latest episode of Congressional Dish I'm your host Jen Briny and this week we're going to start off with a quick

0:24.9

fat checking of the drunken conversation that I had last week and that's going to be

0:29.7

followed by a really interesting segment on something called Alec, which if you've heard of,

0:36.8

I don't know if you've heard all the details and if you haven't heard of it, oh boy, have I got some

0:41.3

information for you.

0:42.3

All right, so this week isn't Oh boy have I got some information for you.

0:43.0

All right, so this week isn't going to be a normal podcast where I go through the bills

0:47.5

that were passed by the House of Representatives.

0:50.0

This week is going to be a little difference because the House of Representatives didn't work this

0:54.2

week and I don't know why.

0:56.1

They just had a week off randomly in the middle of January for reasons that I don't quite get. But anyway, what we're going to do instead is I want to

1:06.4

go back really quick in the beginning of this show and kind of fact-check the conversation

1:11.1

that I had with my husband at the end of last week's

1:15.0

podcast. We had been doing a little bit of drinking and by a little bit of drinking I

1:19.0

mean a lot of drinking and we kind of went off a little bit and so some of as happens in so many

1:25.7

conversations with the things that we talked about we had the basics correct but a

1:29.6

lot of the details got kind of fuzzy so I just want to go back on a couple of those stories

1:33.1

and tell you exactly from researched perspectives what we were talking about and

1:39.3

then the rest of this podcast is going to be dedicated to something called

1:44.0

Alec, which is the American Legislative Exchange Council. And I had heard of it

1:49.5

before, some of you might have heard of it before, but I had no idea to the extent that this influences our government.

1:56.3

I mean this goes all the way at the top so this is really exciting stuff. I'm super excited about this
