We want to begin with the swift verdict and maximum sentence handed down today in the murder of Lakin Riley.

A Georgia jury found 26-year-old Venezuelan migrant Jose Ibarra guilty on all counts and sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Ibarra entered the country illegally, and the murder fueled the heated debate

over the southern border during the race for president. The sentencing followed a heart-wrenching

statement from Riley's mother, who said her daughter's life was not the only one taken on that February

day when she went for a jog on the University of Georgia campus. Her mother said the life of her family and friends was taken too soon.

None of us will ever be the same.

Sobing could be heard in the courtroom as the judge found Jose Ibarra guilty on all 10 counts.
