Fire is still out of control. From Canada to California, dozens of wildfires scorched the west.

It looked like one mass of smoking flames.

You can see it working them's way up the hill.

Hundreds of firefighters are battling the blazing fires

while residents face destruction and lost.

There's nothing to look at.

It's a foundation.

That's all that's left.

Good evening, everyone. I'm Major Garrett in for Nora O'Donnell. California's largest wildfire of the year is 0% contained and tearing across the northern part of the state at a ferocious speed,

driven by unpredictable winds.

At this time on Wednesday, the park fire had burned about two square miles.

48 hours later, it has exploded, burning more than 250 square miles.

That's five times the size of San Francisco.

Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate as the flames, allegedly sparked by an

arsonist, ripped through homes, buildings, and cars. Fires are burning across the west and into

Canada, where a monster wildfire there has destroyed about a third of the structures in the resort town of Jasper.

We have reports from across the region, and CBS's Jonathan Vigliotti will start us off from Northern California.

Tonight crews are struggling to contain this massive fire.

We are talking flames several hundred feet high.
