Welcome to Coffee Break French. In lesson 66, we're going to be looking at two expressions

0:16.9

which will help you increase your range of vocabulary in French. These expressions

0:21.9

are avant de faire quelque chose, and venir de faire quelque chose. In lesson, I'll explain

0:29.9

exactly what these two phrases mean and hopefully by the end of the lesson, you'll be able

0:34.5

to use them in your own speaking and writing in French.

0:38.3

Voilà, bonness en de français.

0:52.5

To begin with, and I know you probably want to forget key and cut, but let's just have a quick

0:57.4

reminder of key and cut from last time. Anna, here's the sentence, is it key or c?

1:04.3

The grammar which we studied last week was difficult. Is that which they are key or c?

1:11.6

That would be c? It's c, because it's followed by a pronoun, okay, which we studied last week

1:19.2

1:25.6

Lesson 65, which has been downloaded tens of thousands of times, has helped people understand

1:34.0

key and c? Okay, so in this case it would be key. That's right, because it's the lesson which

1:42.4

has been it's followed by immediately a verb, the lesson which has been downloaded lots of times

1:48.2

and so on. So I think we've got key and cut sorted. Let's move on. We're going to look at two

1:53.8

expressions today, both of which use the infinitive of a verb. So you don't even need to worry about

1:59.7

conjugating verbs in today's lesson. The first of these expressions is avant de faire quelque chose.

2:08.6

So avant means before. So avant de faire quelque chose means before doing something. So it's a

2:17.2

useful way of extending what you can see about things. We know we can deal with the perfect

2:22.1

tens, we can deal with the imperfect tens, and it's useful to just have that extra element in

2:27.9

our vocabulary, which we can use. So before doing something avant de faire quelque chose,

2:35.5

for example avant de partir, je veux finir mes devoir. Can you translate that?
