| 0:00.0 | Now in this lesson we're going to be leaving verbs for the time being. It's lesson 48 and we're going to consider adjectives and words that you use to describe things. |
| 0:22.0 | I hope that you find this lesson useful. |
| 0:30.0 | Now let's think a little about that word pre or pret. |
| 0:40.0 | I would normally say to Anna es que tu es pret. |
| 0:44.0 | That's P-R-I with a circumflex T-I pret. |
| 0:50.0 | And I say pret to Anna because she's female. So pret is the feminine form of the adjective. |
| 0:57.0 | The masculine form of the adjective is pre. It's built P-R-I circumflex T. |
| 1:05.0 | Now the T at the end is silent like most T's at the end of most French words. |
| 1:12.0 | But in the feminine form the T sounds because there's an E at the end, P-R-I circumflex T-I pret. |
| 1:23.0 | And this pattern is like many French adjectives. Again grammar is all about patterns and when we begin to see patterns and things it makes everything a lot easier to understand. |
| 1:35.0 | We'll come back to pre and pret a bit later because we're going to use another concept or another area of language to help us understand adjectives. |
| 1:46.0 | This area is colors. We've covered colors on a number of occasions but really only as items of vocabulary. |
| 1:53.0 | When we've learned for example that noir means black and blanc means white. |
| 2:00.0 | We're going to add four other colors to this list. They are blue, blue, ver, green, rouge, red, and j'onne. |
| 2:15.0 | Yellow. Now in English when we say the word green for example, regardless of what we're talking about green stays the same. |
| 2:25.0 | So for example we could say a green car, a green house, a green book or even green leaves. |
| 2:36.0 | In each case green stays the same. |
| 2:40.0 | However in French there's a slightly different form of the word depending on what you're talking about. |
| 2:48.0 | Let's take the example of a book, a livre. |
| 2:54.0 | So a book is unlivre, it's masculine. So if we wanted to say a green book then we would say a livre ver. |
| 3:06.0 | Notice that you see in French a book green, a livre ver. |
| 3:12.0 | In more situations the adjective in French comes after the noun, a livre ver. |
