So for today's podcast, we've got a conversation about the formidable Russian Empress with Janet Hartley.

Janet's an emeritus professor at LSE specialising in Russian history.

Our Deputy Digital Editor, Eleanor Evans, met her in London to find out more about the real woman that inspired the series.

So many of our listeners will be familiar with the name Catherine the Great.

But for those who don't know any more than perhaps her moniker, can you give us a

brief introduction to the Empress and the period that she was ruling?

Catherine wasn't Russian. I think that's the first thing to say. She was a German princess

who married into the family and became empress.

But she was probably one of the most successful, one of the greatest of Russian rulers.
