Summary

Today, you’ll learn about hurricanes so powerful they need a new category, bacteria linked to young-onset colo-rectal cancer, and ancient treasures made out of meteorites.

Category 6

  • “In a warming world, climate scientists consider category 6 hurricanes.” EurekAlert! 2024.

If you're a loyal listener, welcome back. Today you'll learn about hurricanes so

0:21.5

powerful they need a new category.

0:23.7

Bacteria linked to young onset colorectal cancer and ancient treasures made out

of meteorites. Without further I do, let's satisfy some curiosity.

0:34.0

The National Hurricane Center has used the Saffer Simpson wind scale for over 50 years

0:39.8

to categorize the potential power a hurricane has to inflict damage.

0:43.7

As most of us know already, and as we've talked about on this show in the past, the scale goes from

0:48.4

a cat one hurricane or the weakest, all the way up to a cat five with wind speeds over 158 miles per hour.

0:55.4

If I recall correctly the reason we've talked about the saffers Simpson wind scale

0:59.8

is because climate change is fueling more rapid intensification where storms basically go from

1:04.7

tropical storm level to explosive category 5 hurricane in a matter of hours.

1:10.1

Yeah, as the oceans in the atmosphere heat up they are able to hold more energy and more moisture.

1:15.0

These storms suck up all that heat from the oceans and use it as fuel to power their devastating winds and rain.

1:22.0

Here's a crazy fact. Imagine the amount of

1:24.0

electricity that the entire planet can generate. Well, winds from a single

1:28.9

hurricane can whip up about half that amount.

1:31.9

Wait, one storm can produce the same amount of energy as half the planet, basically?
