Catalina Island is about 30 miles off the coast of Southern California.

If you're a Mac user, it might be the photo on your desktop right now, because Apple

named an operating system after the island.

So if you are on a Mac, go ahead and close all of your applications and folders.

That is Catalina, a beautiful island with steep rocky cliffs and coves along the coast.

But long before it became the face of an operating system, Catalina Island was known as a destination

for people living along the California coast, a sort of getaway to camp, hike, or visit

the main city of Avalon.

The island has a famous circular movie theater, which by the way, Nick Cage once called his

favorite theater.

But movie stars were coming to Catalina Island long before Nick Cage.

In the 1930s and 40s, celebrities like Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, Humphrey Bogart, and

John Wayne sailed over or flew in from Hollywood to spend the weekend in Avalon.

There was boating, fishing, and partying.
