Summary
CastrationĀ (also known asĀ orchiectomy) is any action,Ā surgical,Ā chemical, or otherwise, by which an individual loses use of theĀ testicles: the maleĀ gonad. Surgical castration is bilateralĀ orchidectomyĀ (excision of both testes), andĀ chemical castrationĀ usesĀ pharmaceutical drugsĀ to deactivate the testes. Castration causesĀ sterilizationĀ (preventing the castrated person or animal fromĀ reproducing); it also greatly reduces the production of certainĀ hormones, such asĀ testosterone. Surgical castration in animals is often calledĀ neutering.
