0:00.0 | Hey everyone, this is Jillian and thanks for tuning in to today's Case Update. |
0:19.8 | As you may remember, in episode 17, I covered the case of Christy Mack and War Machine, |
0:26.3 | aka Jonathan Copenhagen. As a refresher, War Machine, a former MMA fighter, was convicted |
0:35.3 | in March 2017 after beating his ex-girlfriend Christy Mack and her friend, Corey Thomas. |
0:43.7 | War Machine had gone to Christy's home in the middle of the night and had physically attacked |
0:48.4 | her and Corey who had been sleeping next to her. He was found guilty of 29 counts, including |
0:55.3 | battery constituting domestic violence, kidnapping, and sexual assaults. During the trial, |
1:02.6 | Christy Mack and Corey Thomas both testified against their attacker and their accounts of what |

1:21.9 | War Machine is his actual name. He legally changed it from Jonathan Copenhagen to War Machine. |

1:42.4 | listened to episode 17 yet, you might want to do that before listening to this update. |
1:49.6 | War Machine was sentenced on Monday, June 5, 2017. But before we get into what his actual |
1:56.6 | sentence was, I want to recap what went on during the sentencing hearing. |
2:02.4 | First, War Machine's defense team had filed a number of motions, including one for a new |
2:09.2 | trial. They were trying to claim that War Machine had been unconscious during the attack |
2:15.7 | due to a prior brain injury. His attorney, Jay Leederman, called it a blind rage and |
2:23.0 | told the court that he didn't have enough time to prepare that defense for trial. And |
2:27.8 | so War Machine deserves a new trial. But as it turns out, under the Nevada statute, the |
2:34.8 | defense was supposed to file their motion within seven days of the verdict, and they didn't. |
