Summary

58-year-old Ritchie Collins went missing in early 2019. The exact date of his disappearance is unknown. A neighbor reported seeing Ritchie at his home in Bellingham, WA, but that exact date is fuzzy. However, he had not texted or spoken to friends or family members since March of 2019. Ritchie has been described by those who knew him best as a loner, so it would not be uncommon for a few days or even weeks to go by without hearing from him. Ritchie's family had been trying to get ahold of him for weeks. Then on April 30, 2019, Ritchie's car was found parked at the Colonial Creek Campground at North Cascades National Park. The keys to his car had been placed on top of the vehicle. According to a park ranger, the vehicle had been there for weeks.

We first brought you Ritchie's story in March of 2020. When we left off at the end of that episode, there were so many questions left unanswered. Over the July 4th weekend of 2021, some children playing at a camp area several miles from where Ritchie's car was found discovered the first clue that would help find Ritchie.

Ritchie's daughter graciously joined us to give us an update on what has transpired and where her dad's case stands today.

If you have any information regarding the disappearance and death of Ritchie Collins, please contact Detective Ken Gates at 360-778-6613 or contact the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office directly at 360-778-6600.

The week after I found out me and my fiance went to Colonial Creek Campground and Camp There, and I put it off 200 flyers. I put them everywhere at gas stations.

The closest gas station, I put them in the barricades at the campground. I put them everywhere. I've talked to five Rangers when I was up there.

The two that I talked to that were at the New Haven Ranger Station, super nice. They literally took time to answer any of my questions.

1:25.0

How hard it is to find somebody. It's amazing. The vast majority of cases are rescue overwhelming.

1:34.0

I think the search, a true missing person case, is becoming more rare than it used to be, just with the advent of people having better navigation tools like GPS and stuff like that.

1:48.0

I think in general, in broad sweeping turns in wilderness search, the idea that people get lost at a trail junction, right, and turn the wrong way.

2:00.0

That seems like in the beginning of my career, that was a little more prevalent than it is these days, anyway.

When authorities later searched Richie's residence, they found no signs of a struggle. They also found that Richie had a large collection of survival items such as gear and non-perishable foods.

Richie was known for always being prepared for a disaster at any moment. The only significant thing missing from Richie's home, besides Richie himself, was his large gun collection, which to his family makes no sense.
