In 1939, construction workers and archaeologists excavating the grotto's beneath St. Peter's

Basilica stumbled upon into cropless that held a number of stone coffins.

One of the coffins held in an inscription that indicated that St. Peter himself had been

buried within. The bones were placed inside an unassuming shoebox and then recovered by the

Vatican who kept them secured and away from close scrutiny. Vatican corresponded Bruno

Barteloni, wrote that the bones were kept so closely guarded mainly because of a 1,000 year

curse that had been placed on the resting place of St. Peter that would prefer those who

disturbed his final resting place. The Vatican has existed for over 2,000 years with its long

reaching influence in the Western world shaping many of the important events of history.
