Summary

In J. Allen Hynek’s 1972 book The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry , UFO and extraterrestrial encounters were classified into 3 distinct categories. Beyond this original classification by the head of the Air Force’s Project: Blue Book , other scientists following in Hynek’s footsteps would later add an additional four categories. Within these additional classifications you have what are deemed “Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind”. These experiences are characterized by humans being physically abducted by extraterrestrials. Some scientists argue this category should also include experiences where the witness has their reality transformed. Perhaps a near perfect example of this type of encounter would be the events that took place in 1967 in the town of South Ashburnham, Massachusetts. A case that was marked with such “high strangeness” that J. Allen Hynek had declined to interview the witness. Only 10 years later, would notable UFO investigator Raymond Fowler document the incredible experience as details were obtained from numerous sessions of regression hypnotherapy.
