Summary

Kihara is a town in the central west region of New South Wales, located about 300 kilometres

west of Sydney and 190 kilometres north of Australia's capital, Canberra. Prior to European

settlement, the area was occupied by Australia's indigenous warragery people and in the early

1800s, as Europeans began sprawling out from the cosponents, the area was labelled unfit

to settle, so a military depot was built instead. It became known as a place to pass through

when gold was found west, but when gold started being dug up in the surrounding hills, the

town of Kihara was built right on the banks of the Lockland River. Despite the verdict

from early European settlers that Kihara was unfit to settle, it became an area known

for its rich agriculture. The edgel canary was built in 1943, where local vegetables

were canned and sent all over, including to those serving in the Second World War.
