The evening of Sunday March 22, 1970, five months after the murder of Paul Stein in San Bernardino,

California. Kathleen Jones was preparing for a long road trip. The 22-year-old was visiting her

sick mother in Petaluma, a seven-hour drive away. Kathleen, who was seven months pregnant,

just in case. Noticing this, the man promptly braked, then backed up to meet her by the side of

the highway. Speaking in a slow and not-nice voice, he explained that her left rear wheel had

been wobbling. He offered to fix it, and Kathleen accepted. The man fetched a wrench and

denailed by Kathleen's wheel for a couple of minutes, tightening the lug bolts. He then stood

up and told her she was all set to continue. He strolled back to his car and drove away,

without saying another word. Kathleen started her engine and pulled away from the roadside,

but within moments her car came to a grinding halt. She got out to see what was wrong.
