In the early hours of Sunday June 26, 2011, James Anderson, who went by his middle name

of Craig, found himself in a predicament. He had locked his keys inside his car.

It was a setback that happy-go lucky 47-year-old African American man wasn't prepared for.

Craig had gone out alone the previous evening, as his husband of 18 years. James was rusted

on to work a night shift over the weekend.

Our was earlier, James had phoned Craig to remind him to start packing for their upcoming

trip to Chicago in celebration of Craig's 48th birthday in five days' time. Their call

landed with the man telling one another, I love you.

Exorring Chevy Avalanche was parked in a lot off the Metro Inn, a budget hotel in his

home city of Jackson, Mississippi. Located near the intersection of Highway 80 in the

city's west, the lot was relatively small, with around two dozen angled parking spots

split into two near-even rows.
