Ever since she was a little girl, Maria Chinquay had always dreamed of starting a family

of her own. Her wish was fulfilled on June 11, 1971, when she gave birth to her first

child, a boy named Giuseppe. He inherited his name from his grandfather, but was known

to friends and family as Joe. Maria and her husband, DeNino, who were both Italian immigrants,

were besotted with Joe, describing him as the most beautiful baby they had ever seen.

Four years later, Maria gave birth to their second child, a boy named Anthony. The family

of four lived in a neat two-story red brick house in Newcastle, a harbour city on Australia's

east coast, 160 kilometres north from Sydney. Maria and DeNino relished the constant buzz

of activity their sons contributed around to their household and looked forward to each

evening when the family would gather for dinner at the kitchen table and share stories about

their day. The walls of the Chinquay's home were adorned with family photos and
