Bullseye with Jesse Thorne is a production of maximum fun dot org and is distributed by NPR. It's Bullseye I'm Jesse Thorne. I have been banging this drum for years, but Linda Berry is a genius.

She's a comics artist and writer. She started her career as an undergrad at Evergreen College.

She made a regular comic called Ernie Pook's Comique, that ran for almost 30 years.

She's published over a dozen books.

Her work is usually autobiographical, at least somewhat.

It's about her childhood, her family,

her past relationships.

The stories are almost always funny, they're also poignant.

Lately, she's been teaching a lot.

She's a professor at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

She's written several books on the subject of

drawings and comics and how to do and make them. One of her best, what it is, was

just reissued in paperback and when I talked to Linda in 2020 she'd just written making comics.

Linda has a firm straightforward belief that anyone can make comics. The struggle she

says is putting pen to paper and getting out of your head long enough to make something.

That philosophy combined with a 40-plus year career of making brilliant comics helped earn Linda a MacArthur Fellowship.

As I said, a genius, that's the award for geniuses.
