Lady Malvin, a friend of Aunt Agatha, had left her son Motty in the charge of Bertie for a month.

Upon arrival, he had seemed like a quiet, timid young man who wouldn't be much trouble.

But after returning home drunk upon the evening of his mother's departure,

Motty made it clear that he meant to live a wild life in New York with the month that he had.

Bertie was left quite shocked and pondering on how best to manage the young man.
