In the previous part, Bertie hatches an ill-conceived plan to help his friend Freddie win back

the girl of his dreams by kidnapping a toddler, he presumes to be her cousin.

However, when it happens that the toddler is a perfect stranger, Bertie scrambles to find the little one's parents.

Once he does, they all but force him to look after the child for a week to avoid catching the mumps from his sister, leaving Bertie

in a sour position.
