Welcome to Mom and Dad are Fighting, Slate's Parenting Podcast for Thursday, July 18th, the Carpool Liability Waiver Edition.

0:13.7

I'm Dan Cois. I'm an editor at Slate. I'm the author of How to Be a Family, which is coming in September.

0:18.5

And I'm the dad of Lyra, who's 14, and Harper, who's 11.

0:21.7

I'm Rebecca Levoy. I'm a journalist and podcaster in New Hampshire. And I am mom to Henry,

0:26.4

who is almost 18, Teddy, who is 16 and a half, and my stepdaughter, Lily, who is 19.

0:31.4

So today on the show, we've got a mom who is freaking out about carpooling and a woman who

0:36.9

just wants her mom friend to relax about her

0:39.9

rambunctious toddler. Plus, triumphs and fails and recommendations. But first, before any of that,

0:45.4

Rebecca, I want a driving report from Teddy. Where has he gone this week? Good question. Well,

0:52.0

we were away for part of the week, which i'm going to talk about in part of

0:55.9

this podcast but when we got back um the boys were supposed to go back to their dads and he was

1:01.5

taking them on a quick trip to visit his parents in florida so kevin and i were you know we thought

1:07.2

they they were gone we were hanging out on the deck uh and i see see Henry's car drive up or what I have herefore to refer to as Henry's car, drive up to the house.

1:17.2

And Teddy's in the front seat because he wanted to come by and get like some shorts or something to bring to Florida with him.

1:22.2

So he's just like tootling around.

1:24.7

I am somewhat like encouraging him to sort of stay in town, back and forth from

1:29.7

his dad's visiting friends in town so far. We haven't done any like go to Target for me situations yet

1:35.6

because you've got a highway to get there. And I'm sure he'll be fine and that will just happen.

1:40.3

But I'm not putting him in that situation intentionally. But he's doing great. He seems to be

1:44.0

very comfortable. He says he's happy to be driving. And that is all I can ask for at this point. Will you just promise me that he will not drive in Florida because those people are fucking crazy? I don't think he's going to have the opportunity to drive in Florida. But I remember last time I was in Florida thinking the same thing. So I think we're in the same thing about that. I have never spent a minute on a road in Florida, not assuming I was just about to perish in a fiery explosive accident. It is completely insane. All right. So let's start with triumphs and fails today. Rebecca, what do you have for us today? A triumph or a fail?

2:18.9

I've got a good triumph.
