Summary

A moment of inspiration started a movement in the world of hair and body care. That moment happened when Carmen Tal discovered the transformative power of argan oil, beginning her journey to become the creative visionary behind the international, multi-category beauty brand Moroccanoil. While living in Montreal, she received a bad color process that left her hair severely damaged. “I was visiting Tel Aviv soon after this bad experience when I discovered what the Moroccanoil Treatment is today. I was at a local salon when a stylist applied an astonishing argan oil-infused treatment to my hair,” she says. The oil-infused treatment was different from any product she had ever tried before— and as a salon owner, she had tried many. “I saw the results instantly: My hair became shiny, smooth and manageable.”Carmen knew right away that this argan oil treatment was special, and she wanted to share it with other women. At the time, oil treatments were practically unheard of in the industry. “Everyone told us it was a flawed plan, that the market was too saturated with products,” she recalls. But her experience—as a hair salon owner, an executive in the fashion industry and a working mother— gave her a keen instinct for what other women would love. “With the demands of home and work life, finding products that are easy to use and make adventurous styling simple is a priority,” she says. The result was the now-famous original Moroccanoil Treatment. Her pivotal moment of inspiration revolutionized the beauty industry, creating an all-new oil-infused hair care category and an iconic brand in less than a decade.Today Moroccanoil remains the leader in oil-infused beauty, offering a complete line of hair care and styling products, as well as Moroccanoil BodyTM and Moroccanoil SunTM, in more than 65 countries and counting. Moroccanoil products are also used by top stylists for high-profile magazine shoots, fashion shows around the globe and awards shows like the Oscars and the Grammys. As Moroccanoil has grown into an international lifestyle brand, Carmen has remained a passionate, hands-on leader. Her vision forms the core of the brand’s DNA, from the unmistakable turquoise packaging to the exotic signature fragrance. “The Mediterranean is the root of my ideas,” she says. “The colors of the ocean, the clothes people wear, the fragrances in the air all inspire my vision for the brand.”With the launch of the Moroccanoil BodyTM and Moroccanoil SunTM collections, the brand now offers a complete head-to-toe lifestyle experience. “The body lineup is inspired by life’s pleasures—an exhilarating, experiential and sensorial journey through the Mediterranean—with products that not only refresh and rejuvenate the skin, but also provide well-being to the mind and senses.”--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/skincareanarchy/messageSupport this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/skincareanarchy/supportSupport the show

Thank you very much for having me here and share a little bit of the brand history and the future of the brand. Yeah, that's where I want to actually start is just the real the beginning. Like I want to know like what inspired you, what led to the creation of this amazing brand, you know, all the details if you could share those with us.

Sure, I'll try to, you know, it's a it's a long story and it's been already almost 12 years or 13 years. I think we're going for the 13 year.

Believe it or not, this came as a beautiful surprise in my life. About 12 years ago, I had a problem with my hair. Somebody really messed up my head and at that point my hair was really my kind of security blanket and yeah.

2:07.0

And you know how it is when somebody like does a horrible job with the color or the hair cut. Oh, yeah, and your whole life. So lucky for me, I was traveling at the time and I happened to come across what is today be Moroccan treatment.

His head says, I'm going to put this product in your head and you're going to see incredible result. I was blown away. The moment he put it on my hair and and that was love at first sight. So I had no intention of creating anything.

2:42.0

I simply got inspired by these incredible products. I went back home and immediately with my husband at the time, we started to share it seems to bring it to North America and share it with the rest of the world. I thought it just I had never encountered anything like it and from the fragrance to the results.

Even today, you know, I truly think that this is a product that I cannot live without it for my heat. And I hear often that people, you know, it is really one of the most favorite products for, you know, in Oh my gosh. I mean, that's an understatement. I can't live without it. It's such an amazing amazing brand. And I think that every single product that I've, you know, I've encountered I've tried is just everything is so unique and so well crafted.

3:33.0

And that's really why, you know, I've been so excited to talk to you because, you know, you've just done such an amazing job with the whole line. And, you know, I want to dive into that more. But I first I want to know, like, you know, others, and I know that the hair care thing like you, you were, you know, had about experience. But what else, like, you know, inspired you to move into hair care, specifically like oil infused.

3:56.0

Yes, actually, at the time that my hair was ruined, I had a salon of my own. Don't ask me how I got involved in a salon. But I will answer you.

4:08.0

I had a headdresser that was really nice and you know, you create a relationship with your headdresser that's almost as if they are family, brother best friends, whatever.

4:19.0

And I was looking for to open a salon in the neighborhood, what I lived at the time in Montreal, Canada.

4:27.0

And I thought what a great opportunity. I'm ready to go back to work. And I think it would be fantastic for me, even though I don't know anything about headdressing or a salon business.

4:38.0

And I just jumped in and, you know, little I knew that this was for me kind of like the preparation for what was coming.

4:50.0

Because what I've learned in this salon has no, not university would have given me the knowledge that I acquired while I was an owner of a salon.

5:02.0

And because of that, when we brought the brand to North America, immediately we decided that it would be something that would be distributed through Salons, not immediately a retail product.

5:16.0

Really? Why did you choose that avenue? Like, just because of, I mean, I'm just curious, like, why did you want only salons to carry?

5:26.0

Because I experienced that in a salon, when I brought it to Canada and I passed it along to some of the headdresses, I realized how blown away they were.

5:41.0

The couple of reasons why this product is so amazing for the headdress.

5:47.0
