I'm Mick Garrus, and this is Postmortem.

As I'm recording this, Spiderman No Way Home

just grossed $250 million on its opening weekend,

not only by far the biggest opening since the pandemic began,

but one of the biggest openings of all time.

It's great for Spidey and Marvel fans,

but perhaps nothing to cheer about

for those who look to movie theaters for unique, original stories

from visionary filmmakers.

In that regard, it does not portend well

for the future of the standalone original movie.

Guillermo del Torroro's Nightmare Alley

debuted to a weekend gross of under $3 million,

or about 1% of what Spiderman made.
