The program was originally broadcast in 1982, and the presenter was Roy Plumley. This week our castaway is the composer and conductor Carl Davis.

Carl, you live presumably a sort of split personality life.

Half the time you're locked away composing and the other half you're in the early

barely of film and television studios and the theatre which is the real you.

But I think they both are. The term schizophrenia complies two parts so there can't be one without the other I'm locked

away in my studio composing so that I may then enter the marketplace.

What's the first one?

First one is a cantata by the German composer Dietrich Bux de Huda called Aperita Miki Porta Susitier.

I heard it first on a radio program in New York,

and as well as being a very beautiful piece in itself,

it's very beautifully performed by Danish artists,

especially the tenor on it, Axel Schirtz, who's very well known and indeed had a career

in England after the war. And I love the piece very much and sought out the 78

and played it obsessively it just seemed to me a most wonderful kind of balanced and

pure piece of music and one that could take repeated

listening as indeed when I was a child I did listen to it over and over again. Aperita, aperita.
