Chapter 1 True North

Difficulties are just things to overcome, after all, Ernest Shackleton.

They don't call the entrance to the Red Sea, the gates of hell for nothing.

After a 4.30 a.m. start at Port Saeed on the northern end of the Suez Canal, where as

many as a hundred vessels transit out the Mediterranean daily, we chug along at eight knots on what

is possibly the most boring stretch of the water on the globe.

But this was just phase one of our trip.

The plan was to deliver my boss's brand new 157 foot yacht to Dubai, south through the

Red Sea, pass the Gulf of Aden, then up along the coast of Yemen and Oman, and the Arabian

Sea to the United Arab Emirates, a 20-day journey of 4,997 nautical miles.
