Now for a short recap, just to get things started.

November 29, 1872.

40 U.S. troops and a handful of civilians arrive at Captain Jack's camp on the Lost River,

in an attempt to coerce the band back to the Klamath Reservation.

Things get heated and a battle breaks out, resulting in the death of one, possibly two of the civilians, and seven wounded U.S. soldiers.

One Modoc woman and her infant child are killed in the exchange as the band flees down river to the safety of the lava beds, a maze of tunnels, caves, and natural trenches.

On the way there, Hooker Jim and a small group of warriors go on a killing spree, murdering over a dozen settlers around Tully Lake further escalating matters.

Meanwhile, another band of Modoc who were not involved in the battle there

at Lost River, attempt to seek refuge at the reservation. They narrowly escape a lynching along the way,

causing them to abandon their plans and join Captain Jack, Hooker Jim, and the rest down at the lava beds,
