Summary

John Maxwell says that one of a leader’s greatest assets is the perspective of others. That’s why he incorporates what he calls “Learning Lunches” in his schedule regularly. Learning lunches are a time for John to learn from those with different backgrounds and experiences by asking them seven key questions, which John shares in this episode.

John and Mark Cole then share a recent Learning Lunch story in which a new friend tells John how he was able to turn a $100 million setback into the most significant setup for success in his organization’s history.

This is not an episode you want to miss.

Hey, welcome to the John Maxill Leadership Podcast. Mark Cole here on another edition of

0:11.6

candid conversation. And yes, that means John Maxill is here with me. John, I'm excited

0:18.4

today because you're going to share with us something you just learned on this concept

0:25.5

of a learning lunch. You were in DC, you can talk a little bit about that if you'd like, but

0:30.6

I want to challenge all of you. Grab a pan, grab a paper because you're getting to learn from somebody

0:36.7

that learned something from somebody. And I love that. Before we even get into the lesson,

0:41.9

will you talk to me about how you prepare yourself for these learning lunches? You were getting

0:46.7

ready to meet somebody. Sure, sure. And just talk to me about that. Well, I was in DC. Margaret

0:52.4

is on an advisory board from Museum of the Bible. And she has a friend Martha is on that advisory

0:57.1

board. Martha's husband is named John. John Zomalt. And John is a new friend. I had never met him

1:05.7

before. I had met Martha before. And in our very brief meeting conversation, I found out that he

1:12.4

was a CEO and he said something about embezzlement in his company. And so I pulled away because I

1:22.8

had much time then. And the next morning, I thought, I've got to find him and see if I can have

1:27.6

a luncher. In this case, a breakfast with you. Because I'd like to talk to you about how he handled

1:32.0

the problem. And so we did. I grabbed, I found him in the lobby. And so we had we had a learning,

1:37.8

not a learning lunch. We had a learning breakfast there. But as you know, when I do this all the

1:42.1

time, I have these languages. And for you on the podcast, I would encourage you, I teach it in the

1:48.2

area of personal growth and development. I teach a lot of times that if you're at the head of the

1:51.6

class, you're in the wrong class. And the way I keep out of the head of the class is I find people

1:57.5

bigger, better, faster, smarter than I am. And I ask him to go to lunch. I buy the lunch. I don't

2:02.5

even eat. I just ask questions. And I ask seven questions. And these aren't the only questions.

2:07.9

You probably can think of something maybe better than mine. That's for sure. But for 30 plus years,
