Summary

While there have been some excellent matches in Toronto and Montreal, we begin by discussing the unfortunate news that none of the Big 3 nor Serena Williams will play again before the US Open, after Rafael Nadal’s ongoing foot problem has forced him to return home and Serena’s leg injury from Wimbledon will prevent her from playing Cincinnati next week. Will New York be last chance saloon?

Turning our attention to the week’s tennis, Catherine, David and Matt talk about how nice it is to see Bianca Andreescu and Simona Halep back on court, review a bittersweet week for Johanna Konta, make some big Coco Gauff predictions, explain why Aryna Sabalenka continues to impress, try to figure out why Maria Sakkari keeps losing close matches, and dissect what went wrong for Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov.

There’s also a tangential debate about whether there’s too much faff in tennis and what - if anything - can be done about it.

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments. It is crowdfunded by listeners each December.

Hi, this is Billie Jean King. This is Mayan Bartorzi.

Well that all worked out pretty well, didn't it? Just a few short hours after we headlined

0:26.7

to the last podcast, The Return of Nadal. He pulls out and he didn't play Toronto after all because

0:33.3

his foot injury was too severe. In fact he's pulled out of Cincinnati as well, which means the big

0:39.1

three on the men's side and Serena Williams are not playing either Canada or Cincinnati, which

0:46.2

is... I don't know why that shocks me. Catherine Whitaker and Matt Roberts are here alongside me.

0:52.7

Well, virtually of course. Catherine's been presenting TV all day. Matt's in one of his

0:59.1

assorted rooms so that he doesn't wake up his parents and I'm sitting outside listening to

1:03.1

sound of crickets in the background. The middle of the night so I'm allowed to get away with that

1:08.8

in front of Catherine because it's dark and she can't see how lovely it all is.

1:14.0

You're quite a lustre over your left shoulder. It is a nice one. I've been examining that

1:19.9

earlier today along with all the others. But yeah, it's for some reason all day, although it makes

1:26.0

perfect sense that players like Federer who's just turned 40 and Serena Williams who turns 40 next

1:32.4

month and and a jok of issues trying for the grand slam having just played in Tokyo and and Nadal who's

1:41.6

yeah, I mean he's struggling physically. It's not that surprising that these players are not playing

1:47.2

but it this feels like a moment really. I'm not sure I can remember a summer where those

1:54.0

players at the same time were not competing. Can either of you. I mean it probably literally

2:00.7

hasn't happened in Matt's lifetime. Well, I did see a stat certainly on the men's side that no one

2:08.3

has won the US Open through not playing either Cincinnati or Canada since those became a duo I think
