So this is another statement from one of Job's friends speaking truth but applying

it unhelpfully and in a sense inappropriately falsely because

his friends keep telling Job that what he's experiencing is a direct result of some sin in him and not just

in him that what his kids experienced in their death was a direct result of some sin they committed against God, which is not true at the same time.

What Alefaz here is asking is a good question what is man that he can be pure or he who is

born of a woman that he can be righteous. Elphas is pointing to the

So how do we process this?

I want to encourage you when you think about suffering in your life, when you think about experiencing tragedy.

Yes, there are times when sin in our lives directly leads to suffering in our lives where sin can lead to

tragedy sin always leads to dark places and so there are times when that is true when our suffering is a result of sin either in our lives or sin done against us at the same time.

There are other times when suffering in our lives is not a direct

result of a particular sin in our lives. Always be on guard against that kind of theology that says,

okay, if I have cancer or if I'm walking through this trial,

if I'm experiencing this tragedy, then I've somehow said that's not necessarily true.

And even still, yes, suffering, tragedy, these things are ultimately a result of sin in the world.

Things in the world are not as they should be.

We experience suffering and tragedy ultimately because of

sin in the world and here's where the gospel speaks to all of that because in the

gospel God has sent his son Jesus to die on a cross for the sins of all
