Today, as Covid case numbers skyrocket, Boris Johnson says

no new restrictions are needed in England.

Anyone who thinks our battle with Covid is over, I'm afraid, is profoundly wrong.

This is a moment for the utmost caution.

Day after day now, we are witnessing unprecedented Covid case numbers across the UK.

One day last week, we had 200,000 people test positive and the latest figure today is another 218,000.

The number of people of sick or in isolation is causing havoc across the health service and in schools,

with critical workers now being promised daily testing in a bid to keep the country running.

In areas from food processing to transport to our border force,

from the 10th January, we will be rolling out lateral flow testing for all these workers available on every working day.

And yesterday evening, while the Prime Minister was void by the number taking up booster jabs,

he was despairing of those who hadn't.

I mean, how absolutely crazy it is.

Absolutely crazy that there are 2 million slots this week for people to get vaccinated.

And yet, the majority of people in ICU for Covid are not vaccinated.

Despite the record case loads and a health service creaking under the strain,

Johnson said that his strategy is holding.

Different trusts in different places, at different moments,

I will feel at least temporarily overwhelmed.

But will this gamble pay off?
