The budget resolution and potential government shutdown. On Tuesday, the House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution to fund the government through September 30 in a 217–213 vote. The spending package would extend much of current federal funding until the end of the fiscal year, with a $6 billion increase in defense spending and a $13 billion decrease in nondefense spending. The bill passed mostly along party lines, with Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) joining Republicans to vote in favor and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) joining Democrats in dissent. Now, the bill moves to the Senate, where it must garner 60 votes in order to pass by Friday to avert a government shutdown.
