Summary

If the winter blues have got you down, these two things might lift your spirit: (1) the Christmas section at your local Lidl, and (2) the news that a same-sex marriage in one EU country must be recognised in another. But how this ruling is going to be implemented across the bloc—especially in the countries where there are no civil partnership rights—remains to be seen. This week, we unpack the manifold questions raised by this big-step-in-the-right-direction decision. We also examine the Louvre’s controversial new ticketing policy. Is giving cheaper tickets to Europeans a form of discrimination?   Our guest this week is Angéla Kóczé, chair of the Romani Studies programme at Central European University. Angéla recently wrote a compelling article for Verfassungsblog in response to a troubling new Hungarian law. We caught up with her to discuss Europe’s long history of anti-Roma discrimination, including decades of forcible sterilisation of Roma women. This podcast was brought to you in cooperation with Euranet Plus, the leading radio network for EU news. But it’s contributions from listeners that truly make it all possible—we could not continue to make the show without you! If you like what we do, you can chip in to help us cover our production costs at patreon.com/europeanspodcast. An extra incentive to support us this week: on December 15 at 2030 CET, we'll be recording the final episode of the year on Zoom at a very fun live show just for our supporters. We'd love to have you with us!   This week’s Inspiration Station recommendations are the 2022 film Woman on the Roof and the very cool website Mapping Diversity, which reveals just how many streets in your European city were named after women (spoiler: probably very few).   ICYMI: We’ve launched a newsletter! But this podcast would not be possible without the incredibly generous support of our amazing listeners who donate a little bit each month at patreon.com name is Katie Lee. Did I do that right?

That's right. Well done. Yay. Dominic gave me some feedback the other

day listeners. He told me that he feels like he has to say my name for me too often and that it's very

1:02.6

lazy of me and he resents it. So I'm acting on that feedback this week. My name is Katie Lee.

I'm a journalist based in Paris. That one is Dominic Kramer. He's a singer who lives in Amsterdam. And this is the Europeans. It's a podcast about Europe. What a fresh start. I love this. To be fair, like it wasn't really that I resented you not saying your name. It was just that I thought we shouldn't assume that people just know who we are. We've been here for like eight years now. It's true, but some people might be listening

for the first time. Some people might have discovered us via our newsletter. Uh-huh, nice plug, very smooth.

1:35.5

What newsletter I hear you ask? Yeah, we've got a newsletter that we launched last week called Good

1:39.9

Week, Bad Week, and yeah, it's a really nice addition to listening to this podcast. It kind of expands

1:44.9

on some of the things we discussed on the show. And it will also touch on some stories that we

1:48.9

haven't had space for on the show. So, yeah, I really recommend you go and subscribe if you haven't

yet. Yeah, it's a great read. How are you, Dominic? What's been going on in Amsterdam? I am totally

fine. I've been out in the garden planting spring bulbs between bursts

of rain. That's so nice. I've tried to get about 50 bulbs into my garden and into the bit of public space in

2:11.3

front of my house. And it kind of just makes me feel like spring is not so far away, right? It's going to be a

flower explosion in a few months' time. It really is. How have you been? Similarly, I've been trying to sort of escape the winter gloom. Maybe did it in slightly less of a wholesome way than you. I did something that really cheered me up because I was feeling a bit bummed out at the end of last week. And I went to the Christmas section in Liddle.

2:35.4

And before I get loads of angry emails, no, this podcast is not sponsored by Liddle. And yes,

2:40.6

I am aware that they are not a perfect company. But just let me have this one moment. The Christmas

corner in Lidl is like a one-stop festive pan-European wonderland. They've got gingerbread, they've got

2:52.2

Mazipan, they've got little jelly fruit things. I mean, like, you know, around this time of year,

2:58.1

people go to Christmas markets to get into the mood for the holidays. Why are they bothering?

3:02.8

They can just go to little. Sure. I'm not sure like all the independent market sellers that sell things on the
