Summary
Actor Faizon Love sues the film studios for literally erasing him and his co-star Kali Hawk from the movie poster of “Couples Retreat” in the international marketing campaign. We hear firsthand from Faizon about his bold and needed step to correct a long history of Black actors being deemed not marketable in international distribution. And we get into the nitty gritty of this issue with Dr. Jason Johnson, Professor of Journalism and Communication at Morgan State University who breaks down the false narratives at the root of Hollywood erasure in examples of John Boyega from Star Wars posters and others. Shout out to James Andrews for connecting us with Faizon!
Also on the Docket this week, we examine hate crimes against the LGBTQ community within our Black community exhibited by a recent assault visited on Laverne Cox. Our special guest David J. Johns the Exec Dir. of the National Black Justice Coalition and former Obama administration leader of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African-Americans gives advice on how to protect ourselves, our friends and loved ones who are too often targeted by ignorance. This episode was recorded on December 1st which is World AIDS Day, an opportunity for us all to break down stigmas so that we can continue to stop the spread of this disease that, like so many things, disproportionately affects Black Americans. #StopHIV
