Hi, it's Andrew Klaven, and this is this week's interview with chemist James Tor.

After I interviewed Casey Luskin of the Discovery Institute about intelligent design and the

possibilities of intelligent design, a lot of people wrote in and said, well, ID may be

true, but it's not science.

With respect to the people writing in, I think they're missing the point.

No one is trying to confuse science and religion, but I do think the scientific community

has made a concerted effort to do the opposite, to silence religious voices without which,

in my opinion, a lot of science becomes empty and meaningless, and even possibly misguided.

Modern science was fashioned by believing Christians, like Newton and Galileo, who wanted

to understand God's world.

Stephen Meyer also of the Discovery Institute has pointed out that the Christian view of

God's freedom and reason, the fact that God was free to do whatever he wanted, but also

was operating with reason.

Those two things combined to bring about scientific inquiry, because God is free, the

world is contingent.

It could have been other ways, but it was the way God chose to make it, and because we

are made in God's image and share his capacity for reason and an ability to understand some

of his actions, we're capable of understanding the choices he made in the mechanics of how

his world works, and that, according to Meyer, and I actually completely agree with this,

that those premises led to the scientific revolution, and there's no reason we should

feel that these two things are at dagger's drawn, or that religion and science are opposed

to one another.
