Today, Ukraine's army held off a Russian takeover of Kiev in the first phase of the war.

Why phase two is going to be much harder?

A few weeks ago, Russian forces withdrew from around Kiev and many other cities across

Ukraine.

It was the end of the beginning of the war.

When they started positioning men and equipment, preparing for the next chapter.

What we've definitely seen where I am, I mean, Kiev, is we've seen an escalation of attacks

by Russia, a whole barrage of long-range cruise missiles which smacked into Levive in the

West on Monday and hit other targets in Dniepera and an intensification of shelling to in

the Harkiv.

The Guardian's Luke Harding has been watching the start of this new phase.

It does feel like the sort of drums of war are beating here and something is about to happen.
