Summary

Some churches seek to exploit political controversy for self-serving ends. But many more churches instinctively avoid controversy, and steer away from topics that may reveal differences. In this episode, Curtis is joined by Chuck Mingo to explore a different route: treating this upcoming election season as an opportunity for spiritual growth. They make the case that the same spiritual muscles that get built in politics apply also to marriages, parenting, employment and other areas of discipleship. Curtis and Chuck also talk about the practicalities involved: what should happen on Sunday morning (and what shouldn’t); the top rookie mistakes made when first trying to engage in politics; how the posture of the “wounded healer” is necessary for pastors; and much more.

loved, and I got a chance to hear you share your perspective on what it looks like to be faithful

in these changing times when you were in Ohio recently. So it was wonderful to see you.

It was, for listeners, we'll remember perhaps that the podcast we did on an exciting

and that was really fun to be together in Ohio. And actually, our work in Ohio is why I'm so

eager to talk with Chuck today. So Chuck is a teaching pastor at Crossroads Church with the largest

church in Ohio, and he's also the founder, co-founder, I guess, of Undivided, which is a ministry

that helps churches navigate controversies in race. And this is especially relevant to the work

1:31.1

that redeeming babble is doing, because we are about to launch the Afterparty Project in a pilot

rollout in Ohio. And so Chuck being a leading pastor in Ohio would be, I thought would be a great

1:46.6

conversation partner in leading up to this. And with Undivided, he also has great experience in

helping churches navigate through controversial topics. And so Chuck, the way I want to set up

1:59.0

this conversation is really around the question, can political controversy actually serve the local

church? Can it serve the local church, rather than it being a problem? And here's how I would

2:13.2

why I really wanted to talk with you is because, you know, the Afterparty is targeting churches

that have not staked their identity on one party or another. They have not gone all conservative

or all progressive, all MAGA, or all woke. They are being led by, and I think are populated,

primarily by people who either believe consciously or believe instinctively that the allegiance to
