The transformation of Prince Charles, a man we've known for seven decades,

into something greater than himself.

I am deeply aware of this great inheritance and of the duties and heavy responsibilities

of sovereignty which have now passed to me. King Charles III, a symbol of a whole nation,

of lots of nations, as far away as Jamaica and Canada and Papua New Guinea.

Whether he can succeed in becoming that icon won't come down to the centuries-old rituals

we've been witnessing over the past few days, but to the man at the center of them.

My life will of course change as I take up my new responsibilities.

It will no longer be possible for me to give so much of my time and energies to the charities

at issues for which I care so deeply.
